During her time at university studying textile design, Seonaid spent a lot of time focusing on recycled / remade textiles and closed loop policies, it was the focus of her design development but also her dissertation. It was a passion for that research, delving in to deep rabbit holes of information, combined with a need to pursue her creative endeavours that formed the basis of The Clothworks.
Textile manufacturing is one of the oldest human industries, but it also one of the most polluting, the fashion industry in particular is responsible for up to 8% of our yearly carbon emissions. There is an abundance of textiles already in circulation, so it is our aim where possible to use pre-loved natural fabrics for our creations., which we source locally to reduce our carbon footprint. When we are unable to get our hands on second-hand fabric, we source only sustainable and responsibly made fibres.
The use of solely natural fabrics is key for the eco-dyeing process, it - these fabrics are better for the planet, better for your skin and in some cases can be antimicrobial.
There is an abundance of nature around us that can provide a beautifully varied colour palette without the use of chemicals. Eco-dye and print is an entirely natural process that uses no synthetic chemicals.
All items foraged from our city’s spaces are done so responsibly. Windfall is collected as priority and any other leaves, berries and barks are taken sparingly in order to preserve the delicate eco-system of this place. We also strive to use plant waste as part of our dye portfolio.
When it comes to our carbon footprint, we're doing our best to keep it small. We strive to make this process as waste free as possible, sourcing locally and sustainably, then using any leftover fabric, paper and thread scraps to create accessories, make business cards / tags or to put towards our cushion stuffing.
We are committed to the 'reuse, remake, repair, recycle' process and are working towards making our business a closed loop system. Watch this space!
